Proposed Improvements

Please reference the map below for key elements (A-F) of the project.

Construction will include all new pavement and sidewalks. Main Street west of Meridian Street and Meridian Street north of Main Street will have angle parking (A) on both sides. The 100 Block of E Main and the 100 Block of S Meridian will have angle parking on one side and parallel parking (B) on the other, as shown in the diagram.

Church Street will also be reconstructed with angle parking on both sides of the street. As land use transitions to residential, Church Street would again be narrowed down to match the existing road widths near the intersections of Willow Street and Chestnut Street.

The area between the curb and buildings will now be wider to expand sidewalks (C) for pedestrian use and business integration. Bump-Outs (D) with reduced curb heights will be placed at the intersections for improved safety of the corridor, including reducing the crossing dimension (E).

The alleys in Blocks 91 and 92 will be reconstructed to the standard 14-ft bituminous pavement with an inverted crown for drainage. The alley surface in Block 103 will be milled and overlayed with 2 inches of bituminous.

The current lighting system (F) will be replaced in conjunction with the street improvements to meet current lighting standards. New hardware will enable Public Works to maintain the lighting system adequately and consistently.

The sanitary sewer main will be replaced throughout the project area. Storm sewer will also be upsized to meet current design standards. The majority of the watermain and water services were replaced during the 1999 project.

To foster community cohesiveness, business development, entrepreneurship, and increased business occupancy, numerous amenities and enhancements are included in addition to the standard improvements detailed above. They include decorative pavers, areas of colored concrete, trees, decorative fencing, benches, and numerous other aesthetic features. These amenities are intended to complement existing architectural elements of the downtown area as well as expand upon design features included in the recently completed City Gateway Lot.
