Lead Service Line Replacement

In September 2024, Hibbing Public Utilities began replacing lead water service lines throughout the city to ensure safe drinking water for residents. This lead service line replacement project will continue in 2025.

Why is lead a problem? – Lead can have a negative impact on nearly every organ and system in your body. Young children and infants are particularly vulnerable to even small doses of lead.

How does lead get into drinking water? – Lead can contaminate drinking water when water service pipes and fixtures containing lead corrode. This is more likely to occur where the water source has high acidity or low mineral content.

What is a water service line? – A water service line connects the water main to individual properties to supply water.
