Project Summary Update

The City of Orono will be making improvements to various roads throughout the city. The project includes a mill and overlay (or bituminous pavement reclamation) of several streets throughout the city. These streets include: Turnham Road, Chippewa Lane, High Lane, West Lake Street, Linden Avenue, Oak Street, Park Avenue, Fairview Cottage Lane, Highwood Lane, a portion of Kelly Parkway near Old Crystal Bay Road, Lakeview Terrace, Country Club Road, Long Lake Boulevard, Dakota Avenue, Dickenson Street, Orono Lane, Arbor Street, Lakeview Avenue, Crystal Avenue and Prospect Avenue. Prior to paving, several roadway culverts in the project area will be replaced.

Prior to the Street Improvements Project, a number of roadway culverts in the project area will be replaced. At this time the contractor has not submitted a proposed schedule. Weekly updates will be posted here once construction begins.

Project Update

August 4, 2022

Phase 1 and 2:

Restoration work continued this week. The contractor is continuing to water the hydroseed and grass, as they are responsible for grass maintenance during the first few weeks after seeding. Residents should avoid walking or driving on the new topsoil and seed for a few more weeks.

Phase 3

The contractor adjusted manholes with failing concrete rings this week. These adjustments will ensure the manhole covers are 1/4″ below the finished pavement. Paving the wear (top) course on the roads has been postponed until Monday through Wednesday (8/8 – 8/10). The asphalt is typically installed at temperatures between 275° F and 350° F. Since the roads are not wide enough to have two passes with the paver, only one pass will be used. Residents will be able to drive over the fresh asphalt once the pavement has been rolled. It will take about an hour for paving work to occur. Shortly after the roads are paved, the contractor will restore disturbed areas within the project. Restoration will consist of topsoil and hydroseed. The contractor is responsible to water the hydroseed for the first few weeks.

Phase 4

The reclaimer will be onsite Thursday, August 11. Reclaiming roads is the process of crushing the asphalt road and mixing it with the gravel underneath the road. Residents can drive on the gravel once crushed. Shortly after the roads are reclaimed, the contractor will be around to lower all manhole covers along the road. They are lowering the covers to give them a chance to shape the new road.

The timeline for this work is approximate and may change based on weather and sub-contractor availability. Please refer to the weekly updates on this page for the most up to date information. Weekly updates will occur towards the end of each week. For specific questions or concerns, please contact Kristina Brierley.
