Caring for your new sod

The contractor’s sod warranty has now expired for the sod installed in August. This means that homeowners are now responsible for caring for their new sod.

Please note that some sod areas may have been impacted by remaining Xcel Energy work. If this occurred, the contractor replaced the sod marked by a white Xcel flag on September 29.

Sod installed at the beginning of October will have a 30-day maintenance period where watering will be completed by the contractor.

Care of new sod is very important because new sod roots can take over a year to reach full length. Please follow these guidelines below for healthy, strong sod!

  • Watering. It is recommended that the new sod get at least two inches of water per week in three or four applications.
  • Mowing. Prior to mowing, set the mower deck at the highest setting and mow the new sod with this setting the first couple times. Your new sod will die if you begin by mowing it at the same setting you use on your mature lawn. Gradually lower the mower deck (mow a couple times at each setting) until it reaches the height at which you cut your mature lawn.
  • Fertilizing. Your new sod was fertilized where it was grown and will not need fertilizer until next spring. If you fertilize sooner, you risk killing the sod. When you do fertilize, use a zero phosphorous/low nitrogen mixture, as recommended by the City of Prior Lake. Follow manufacturer’s instructions on application.
