12th Avenue NE & St. Mary’s Street Improvements


Project Overview

This project will start this spring as soon as the weather allows contractors to begin. This will include extending 12th Avenue to the north and building a new railroad crossing. It will also include extending St. Mary’s Street to the east to connect with 12th Avenue on the south side of Home Cemetery. Elm Street will also be extended to the east and tied into 12th Avenue just north of the new railroad crossing.

Updated as of 11/6/2020

Work completed this week:

Evergreen Companies seeded and used hydro mulch on the boulevard areas.

 

Work still to be done this year:

Mathiowetz construction plans to finish ripping the topsoil in disturbed areas. M.R. Paving and Excavation will be back to finish the water service connection for Home Cemetery and install a meter manhole.

 

Work for next year:

Upon completion this year what will be left for next year is paving the roadways, curb & gutter and side walk.

Work completed this week: Mathiowetz Construction finished placing gravel (class 5) on all surfaces. Mathiowetz Construction also finished distributing the topsoil on disposal site 1 (the lots on the east side of 12th Ave). Work still to be done this year: Mathiowetz construction plans to finish ripping the topsoil in disturbed areas. Mathiowetz also plans to finalize the slopes on disposal site 1. M.R. Paving and Excavation will be back to finish the water service connection for Home Cemetery prior to this year’s completion date (10/31/20). Evergreen Companies is scheduled to temporary seeding the boulevards and other disturbed areas that there was vegetation prior to construction.

Work completed this week: Mathiowetz Construction placed gravel (class 5) on St. Mary’s Street and 12th Ave. Mathiowetz Construction also finished continued to construct edge drain on St Mary’s Street. Mathiowetz Construction continued to spread topsoil on disposal site one (east of 12th Ave). Evergreen Companies finished seeding the areas around the pond, and the city lot just north of the Event Center. Work planned next: Mathiowetz construction plans to continue ripping the topsoil in completed areas. Mathiowetz also plans to continue finalize the construction of the gravel base over the roadways on site. M.R. Paving and Excavation will be back to finish the water service connection for Home Cemetery prior to this year’s completion date (10/31/20).

Work completed this week: Mathiowetz Construction finished the excavation of the retention pond. Then Evergreen Companies was able to begin seeding the bottom slope of the retention pond. The storm sewer has been completed by Mathiowetz Construction on Elm Street, Birch Street and Emmerich Street. They have also begun constructing storm sewer on 12th Ave. M.R. Paving and Excavation finish construction of watermain on all parts of the project including the tie ins at St. Mary’s and Birch (for future use). Mathiowetz Construction has also continued to shape the three disposal sites and fill the areas as needed. Mathiowetz Construction also began constructing edge drain on Elm Street. Work planned next: Mathiowetz construction plans to continue constructing storm sewer on 12th Ave and then move to St. Mary’s when completed. They will also follow behind the storm sewer with their edge drain to keep the subgrade of the road dry in the future. Mathiowetz construction will continue working on 12th Ave and the west end of St. Mary’s in order to dry it out prior to gravel being placed on top of it.

Work completed this week: Mathiowetz Construction continued excavation of the retention pond. They have begun excavating out the edges of the retention pond near to final grade. With the removed soil being brought to south of the pond (disposal site 2). Mathiowetz Construction also began excavating to subgrade on St. Mary’s St. Mathiowetz Construction mobilized a sewer crew to begin constructing storm sewer from the pond to Elm Street. Mathiowetz Construction prepared Class 5 in the railroad right of way. This allowed for M.R. Paving and Excavating to pave across the 12th Avenue railroad crossing. M.R. Paving and Excavating also finished installing watermain along 12th Ave NE. After completion of the watermain in 12th Avenue they began installing watermain on St. Mary’s Street. Work planned next: Mathiowetz construction plans to continue excavation of the pond. Mathiowetz Construction will also continue to disk and compact the disposal sites and roadways. Mathiowetz Construction plans to finish the storm sewer on Elm Street and move to the storm sewer on Birch Street. M.R. Paving and Excavation will continue to construct watermain on St. Mary’s Street.

Work completed this week: Mathiowetz Construction continued excavation of the retention pond. With the removed soil being brought to the east side of the site to disposal site 1. They have also been stripping the top 2 feet of black dirt to be redistributed around the site. Mathiowetz also constructed a permanent access road to the north of St. Mary’s Street to allow traffic access while construction is occurring in that area. M.R. Paving and Excavating finished the run installing sanitary sewer along 12th Ave NE. Work planned next: Mathiowetz construction plans to continue excavation of the pond. Mathiowetz Construction will also continue to disk and compact disposal site 1. Mathiowetz Construction also plans to strip topsoil and the current gravel road on St. Mary’s St. M.R. Paving and Excavation will continue to construct watermain on 12the Ave.

Work completed this week: Mathiowetz Construction continued excavation of the retention pond. With the removed soil being brought to the east side of the site to disposal site 1. They have established a short gravel road into Elm Street. This gravel road has allowed for M.R. Paving and Excavation to have a solid base to haul screened topsoil to the other project in town. This topsoil is being screened onsite near the east side of Elm Street. M.R. Paving and Excavation have also finished installing sanitary sewer on Birch Street. Their pipe crew then finished the run heading north on 12th Ave NE and began to work their way south through 12th Ave NE. Work planned next: Mathiowetz construction plans to continue excavation of the pond. Mathiowetz Construction will also continue to disk and compact disposal site 1. M.R. Paving and Excavation will continue to construct sanitary sewer along 12th Ave heading south.

Work completed this week: Mathiowetz Construction began excavation of the retention pond. With the removed soil being brought to the east side of the site to disposal site 1. M.R. Paving and Excavation have continued to install sanitary sewer on Birch Street. They also finished installing 3 out of 4 sanitary sewer lines that run through the easements. These sanitary sewer lines serve the norther most lots on site. Work planned next: Mathiowetz construction plans to continue excavation of the pond. They also plan to establish a short gravel road into Elm Street. This gravel road will allow for M.R. Paving and Excavation to have a solid base while they begin screening topsoil for the other project in town. M.R. Paving and Excavation also plans to finish sanitary sewer on Birch Street. After completion of Birch Street, they will move to 12th Ave and begin heading north.

Work completed this week:

Mathiowetz Construction began installing storm sewer near the existing end of Elm Street NE. They tied into existing storm sewer on Elm Street and began running it north towards the retention pond. M.R. Paving and Excavation have continued to install sanitary sewer on Birch Street. They have also dropped back on Birch street to install the sanitary sewer services that run through the easements on the north side of the road.

Work planned next:

Mathiowetz construction plans to continue storm sewer work near Elm Street and carrying it up to the retention pond. Mathiowetz Construction also plans on starting the excavation of the retention pond. M.R. Paving and Excavation will continue to work on sanitary sewer and services on Birch Street.

Work completed this week:

Mathiowetz Construction finished removing topsoil on Birch Street, so that M.R. Paving and Excavation can begin utility work. This topsoil will be redistributed over future Birch Street after the sanitary main is completely installed and tested. M.R. Paving and Excavation finished constructing sanitary sewer and watermain on Elm St. and have moved to constructing sanitary sewer on Birch Street.

Work planned next:

M.R. Paving and Excavation will continue to work on sanitary sewer on Elm St. NE. Mathiowetz Construction plans to begin work digging out the retention pond and looks to start mobilizing a storm crew in the coming weeks.

Work completed this week:

M.R. Paving and Excavation has continued constructing sanitary sewer main line and services on Elm St. NE. They have also begun constructing water main and services on Elm St. NE. They started at the end of existing watermain line on Elm St. NE and began working eastwards.

Work planned next:

M.R. Paving and Excavation will continue to work on sanitary sewer and water main in Elm St. NE. Mathiowetz Construction plans to mobilize a crew mid to late next week to begin stripping topsoil at the retention pond and along Birch St. NE.

Work completed this week:

M.R. Paving and Excavation has begun constructing sanitary sewer main line and services on Elm St. NE. They started at the existing end of Elm Street and are working their way East towards future 12th Ave NE.

Work planned next:

M.R. Paving and Excavation will continue to work on sanitary sewer in Elm St. NE. When they complete the sanitary sewer on Elm St. NE., they will then go back to the existing end of Elm St. NE. and begin to install watermain along Elm St. NE.

Work planned for next week: M.R. Paving and Excavation plans to begin installing sanitary sewer on Elm St. NE mid next week. After finishing utility work on Elm St they will move to complete utility work on Birch St.

Updated as of 6/25/2020

Completed work this week: Nuvera strung a temporary telecommunication line alongside the South side of the home cemetery. This temporary line crosses St. Mary’s St. near the South West corner of the home cemetery where it reconnects into the existing telecommunications network. Work planned for next: M.R. Paving and Excavation plans to commence utility work in proposed Birch Street starting tentatively the third week of July (7/12 – 7/18).

Completed work this week: Evergreen Companies began permanently seeding the established ditch north and south of the railroad tracks. Along with seeding the railroad ditches, they seeded the berm located on the eastern limits of the project site. Evergreen Companies also finished installing silt fence and bioretention logs as required by the Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan to minimize runoff & erosion from the project. Work planned for next week: No construction planned for next week.

Completed work this week: Mathiowetz Construction regraded the ditch slopes north and south of the railroad. Mathiowetz Construction also established the subgrade for the railroad switch relocation. In this subgrade at the bottom was roughly two feet of sand and one foot of class five. Powell Peterson Inc. filled the steel casing pipe running underneath the railroad with sand. This gave the watermain pipe inside of the casing an extra layer of protection. Work planned for next week: Evergreen Companies plans to begin seeding the established ditch north and south of the railroad tracks (weather permitting). Mathiowetz Construction will begin placing silt fence as required by the project Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan.

Completed work this week: Midwest Boring completed the installation of a 16” steel casing crossing under the railroad tracks north of the current end of 12th Ave NE. and plan to push the new watermain under the tracks in the casing by the end of the day on Friday (6/5/20.) Mathiowetz began grading and placing sand and class 5 for the extension of an existing rail spur east of the proposed rail crossing. Mathiowetz also began grading a ditch north of the railroad tracks to drain away from the proposed railroad crossing. Work planned for next week: M.R. Paving and Excavating will begin sand filling the steel casing pipe that runs under the railroad. Mathiowetz will begin building the subgrade within the railroad right of way.

Completed work this week Carr’s Tree Service cleared 280 feet of trees east and west of 12th Ave NE. They also cleared and ground the roots of 33 trees near the cemetery and filled the holes back in with topsoil. Work planned for next week Early next week Midwest Boring plans to begin boring a 16” casing pipe underneath the Railroad tracks north of the current end of 12th Ave NE. After the casing pipe is in place M.R. Paving and Excavating will be able to safely install the 8” watermain pipe through the casing. During the boring process Mathiowetz Construction will be grading in the railroad right of way for a spur extension through proposed 12th Ave NE. Updated as of 5/15/2020 Mathiowetz Construction has completed the installation of the main storm sewer outlet for the site. As of today, they have placed nearly 2,100 feet of pipe, two manholes, and the pond elevation control structure. The crew has also removed approximately 22,000 cubic yards of topsoil for clay materials from the pond to be placed. Mathiowetz is planning to relocate to a different site to allow their subcontractors to come in and bore watermain under the railroad and remove trees. Updated as of 5/7/2020 Mathiowetz Construction has been working westward from an existing tile connection towards the proposed pond for an outlet. They have placed nearly 1,400 feet of 8” storm sewer, two manholes, and will need to continue to place an additional 650 feet of 8” storm sewer to reach the proposed storm pond. The crew has also been busy removing approximately 11,000 cubic yards of topsoil for clay materials from the pond to be placed.
