Main Street Improvements

Overview

The Cottonwood Main Street Improvements project aims to revitalize the downtown corridor by reconstructing several streets. This includes reconstructing the roads to improve durability and safety, upgrading underground utilities to ensure reliable water and sewer service, and replacing failing street light wiring, controls, and foundations. The project will enhance pedestrian accessibility by replacing sidewalks, making the area more welcoming and safer for residents and visitors. 

Project Area

The project area includes the following streets:

  • Main Street, from W 5th Street to E 1st Street
  • W 4th Street from Main Street to Front Street
  • W 2nd Street from Fire Hall Driveway to Front Street
  • W 1st Street, from Main St to Front Street (street light improvements will extend south to Barstad Road)
  • E 1st Street, from Prairie Street to Main Street

Construction Schedule

  • 2025-2026: Project Design
  • May 19, 2026:  Open House
  • 2027: Construction

Construction Goals

  • Essential infrastructure in the project area is in poor condition and needs to be improved. Addressing deteriorating infrastructure will improve quality of life in the project area by increasing reliability and efficiency of utilities and streets.
  • Sanitary sewer improvements consist of replacing the sewer mains, manholes, and services. These improvements will reduce tree root problems and infiltration, while increasing reliability and efficiency.
  • Watermain replacements will replace existing cast iron mains. PVC mains will remain in place. Valves and hydrants will be replaced, and new mains will be added where needed. Water service lines will be replaced to all properties. The project will also include removing and replacing lead or galvanized water service lines found in both businesses and homes within the project area.
  • Buried power lines to the streetlights are failing and will be replaced. The streetlights will be salvaged and reinstalled on new concrete foundations.
  • Streets and curbs will be reconstructed where necessary for utility replacement. ADA compliant sidewalks will be constructed in the downtown area.
