City of Litchfield

Swift Avenue and Ripley Street Reconstruction

Overview

The Swift Avenue and Ripley Street Reconstruction Project will replace deteriorating infrastructure throughout Litchfield. In reconstruction areas, this project will replace aging sanitary sewer, water main, and storm sewers and fully reconstruct streets with new pavement and concrete curb and gutters.

Some areas will receive new pavement using a mill & overlay technique, which removes the top two inches of pavement and replaces it with a new asphalt surface.

Project Area

Reconstruction Areas:

  • North Swift Avenue from West Sixth Street to Depot Street
  • South Swift Avenue from Evergreen Park Boulevard to West Ripley Street
  • West Ripley Street from South Swift Avenue to South Miller Avenue

Mill & Overlay Area:

  • South Swift Avenue from Evergreen Park Boulevard to Depot Street.

Construction Schedule

The construction schedule will be posted here once details are finalized with the contractor.

Construction Goals

  • Essential infrastructure in the project area is in poor condition and needs to be improved. Addressing deteriorating infrastructure will improve quality of life in the project area by increasing reliability and efficiency of utilities and streets.
  • Sanitary sewer improvements include replacing the sewer mains, manholes, and services to buildings. These improvements will reduce infiltration (clean water entering sewers and reducing system efficiency) and improve reliability.
  • Watermain improvements include replacing the existing watermain, which is undersized and deteriorating, with new PVC pipe. New hydrants, valves, and services to buildings will also be installed.
  • Storm sewer in the project area will be replaced in existing locations, and new storm sewer will be installed in other locations, which will improve capacity and reliability.
  • Streets will be fully rebuilt after underground utility work is completed in reconstruction areas, which will include a new road base, new pavement surfaces, and new concrete curb and gutter.
