Broadway Avenue Reconstruction Project

What will construction look like?

Construction is anticipated to begin on Monday, April 19, weather permitting, and last through Fall 2022. Construction work will take place Monday – Friday, 7 a.m. – 7 p.m., with the possibility of some work taking place on Saturdays should construction fall behind schedule.

Drivers can expect major disruption when traveling through and around the corridor for the duration of the project. Please follow all detour signs throughout the project for the best navigation during this time.

North Broadway Ave Pedestrian Detour

Traffic Impacts

April 19 – May 10 (dates are weather dependent)

  • Silver Lake Drive NE will be closed at the North Broadway intersection. This closure is for the construction of a bypass that will be used for the future project detour.
  • North Broadway traffic will be restricted to one lane northbound and one lane southbound between 11th St North and the Zumbro River bridge.
  • Sidewalks and Recreational Trails:
    • Access along and across North Broadway Avenue will be maintained at all times.
    • The Silver Lake Trail on the south side of the lake will be closed near 13th St/North Broadway Avenue. A signed pedestrian detour for trail users, including cyclists, will provide a path for crossing North Broadway.
  • Rochester Public Transit:
    • Some delays may occur on routes 21, 101, 102, and 150X due to traffic restrictions and potential backups.

Beginning May 10 (dates are weather dependent)

  • North Broadway will be closed to through traffic between Civic Center Drive and Silver Lake Drive NE. Thru traffic will detour to Silver Lake Drive NE. Local traffic and business access for North Broadway will utilize side streets (5th Street North to 13 1/2 Street North).
  • Sidewalks and Recreational Trails:
    • Access along and across North Broadway Avenue will be maintained at all times.
    • The Silver Lake Trail on the south side of the lake will re-open via a temporary pedestrian and bicycle path. This temporary route, for pedestrians and cyclists alike, will use 12th Street NE and North Broadway to connect trail users to the Cascade Creek Trail and the Silver Lake Trail on the north side of the lake. This temporary route will be in place for the first phases of the project and will be modified as the work locations shift throughout the 2021 construction season.
  • Rochester Public Transit
    • Routes 101, 102, and 21 will detour along Silver Lake Drive NE. Temporary bus stops will be installed along the detour routes. See for more information.
  • Pedestrian access will be maintained throughout the project either on existing sidewalks or via temporary routes. Pedestrians and cyclists should pay close attention to any sidewalk/trail closures that direct individuals to a detour.
