2025 Sunset Drive Improvements
Financing for this project was provided in part by the Metropolitan Council through the Transportation Advisory Board’s Active Transportation Fund as established by the Minnesota Legislature and the Minnesota Department of Transportation through the Local Road Improvement Program (LRIP).
Construction Update: June 13th, 2025
The city of Jordan and Jordan School District will reconstruct the portion of Sunset Drive that runs between the elementary school and high school spring through fall 2025.
The construction contract for the Sunset Drive Improvements project was awarded to S.M. Hentges & Sons from Jordan. Construction will begin June 2nd, 2025 and Sunset Drive will be closed to motorists from Aberdeen Avenue to east of Hillside Drive. This area will be closed to traffic until late August. Residents with homes that have direct access to Sunset Drive or Hillside Drive within the project area will be able to access their homes.
As construction continues on the Sunset Drive Improvements Project, all sidewalks in the project area will be closed to bicycle and pedestrian traffic. This will ensure the safety of the public and the contractors. Please review the detour and access map, which provides further clarification of the available access/parking locations within the project area, detour routes, local access routes, and pedestrian access/crossings around the project area.

- The Jordan High School staff lot (easternmost parking lot off Sunset Drive) is open and is accessible as a local access route from the south via Hope Avenue to Hillside Avenue.
- The Jordan High School activities lot off Hope Avenue near the baseball/softball fields is accessible from the south along Hope Avenue.
- The Jordan Elementary School accesses are closed for the summer, as the building and playgrounds are closed for the summer.
Pedestrian walking paths are available near Jordan Middle School, east along Sunset Drive, and along Cedar Lane. A temporary pedestrian crossing of Sunset Drive is available between the CERC and Jordan High School.

Project Background
A 2019 traffic study completed by the City and School District evaluated the existing and expected future traffic levels and impacts along Sunset Drive in the area. The analysis determined the area is best served by a pair of compact roundabouts along Sunset Drive, coupled with a series of driveway access closures and traffic re-routing within the elementary school site. This layout was identified as the most efficient and safe way to move vehicle and pedestrian traffic through the area.
The roundabouts are planned to be aligned with:
- The entrances to the Elementary School and recently relocated Community Education and Recreation Center access
- The Hillside Drive, Sunset Drive, and High School entrance intersection
The school district designed their parking lot and pickup/drop-off area improvements to align with the proposed Sunset Drive improvements.
Schedule
- Spring 2025: Private utility relocation work begins (Sunset Drive open to traffic)
- June 2nd, 2025: Road construction begins (Sunset Drive closed to traffic)
- Labor Day 2025: Road construction substantially complete (Sunset Drive open to traffic)
