Sunset Drive Improvements
Background
The City of Jordan and Jordan School District are working together on a project to improve Sunset Drive where it bisects the school campus. A 2019 traffic study completed by the City and School District evaluated the existing and expected future traffic levels and impacts along Sunset Drive in the area. The analysis determined the area is best served by a pair of compact roundabouts along Sunset Drive, coupled with a series of driveway access closures and traffic re-routing within the elementary school site. This layout was identified as the most efficient and safe way to move vehicle and pedestrian traffic through the area.
The roundabouts are planned to be aligned with:
- the entrances to the Elementary School and recently relocated Community Education and Recreation Center access
- the Hillside Drive, Sunset Drive, and High School entrance intersection
The preliminary layout developed during the 2019 analysis can be viewed above. The school district’s referendum passed in the spring of 2023, and the design of improvements to the school site is currently underway. The school district is designing their site improvements to the parking and pickup/drop-off area to align with the proposed Sunset Drive improvements. The improvements to Sunset Drive will be implemented in 2025, with the 2nd year of the upcoming 2024 – 2025 school campus construction.
